We started by replacing the box wood shrubs in the library bed that had been defoliated by the leaf cutter ants rather than wait for them to grow new leaves.  Since we are confident that in time they will grow new foliage, we planted them, along with some new plants at the north end on the front pond where the lack of foliage is less noticeable while they recuperate.

In the beds along the front walkway we planted a low growing flowering plant that will be trimmed into a hedge.  Unlike the hibiscus bushes that were taken out, these new plants will have blooms on them all year long.

We also planted two rows of hibiscus bushes in the bed west of the umbrella patio.  We amended the soil with fertilizer and with the onset of the raining season we expect these plants to do well in this area.  Ground cover plants were placed in front of the shrub line and when they mature it will make it easier to keep the bed looking crisp and clean.  Some of the day lilies in this area are in bloom and the delicate white bloom is very pretty.

NOTE:

It was reported to me that a person was observed that last week taking down one of the posted garden updates and putting it in their pack.  The postings are for the benefit of all visitors to our grounds and should not be disturbed.  If you would like to have a copy to take with you, the volunteers in the Member Services Office can provide you with one.  Also if you would like more information about the activities in the gardens I would be glad to meet and talk to you.  I am usually at LCS on Thursdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm or you can call me at 766-1653 to arrange a time for us to meet.
